How To Apply

SMCC maintains a rolling admissions policy for most programs allowing candidates to apply and be considered for acceptance throughout the year. However, due to competition for acceptance to some programs, early application (6 months prior to the fall) is encouraged. Applications to Nursing (only) should be submitted by mid December for the following year. Call the Admissions Office at 1-207- 741-5520, or toll free (in Maine) 1-877-282-2182, if you have any questions.

All programs usually begin in late August or early September. January admission is possible for most programs, but students may be limited to taking primarily general education courses. Although the majority of day students are full-time, part-time study can be arranged. Evening classes are available in many programs. The college reserves the right to cancel programs as deemed necessary.

A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for all programs.

The items below must be submitted prior to consideration for acceptance:

  1. Complete application and non-refundable $20.00 application fee.

  2. Official high school transcript for all years attended and, if applicable, adult diploma, or GED test scores. Please have transcripts sent to the Office of Admission at Southern Maine Community College, Fort Road, South Portland, Maine 04106.

  3. If you want transfer credit, we must receive official post-secondary transcripts (college, university, etc.). Please have all transcripts sent directly from each educational institution to the Office of Admission

  4. Assessment testing (reading, sentence skills, arithmetic and elementary algebra) is normally required unless applicant provides satisfactory SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores or a proven history of successful college coursework involving both English and mathematics. The Admissions Office will notify applicants if testing is needed.

  5. Other materials as requested by the Office of Admission.

Some preference is given to qualified Maine citizens as well as veterans of military service.

Once accepted, a physical examination, complete health form and an updated immunization record (in accordance with Maine State Law) will be required prior to attending classes.
