International Students

The Southern Maine Community College has a small but growing number of international students. Accepted international students receive INS form I – 20, required to obtain an “F-1” student visa. We welcome the interest of students from all countries and treat the application of international students the same as students from the United States. In addition to the admissions criteria outlined in the “Admissions Requirements” portion of this web site, International Students have two additional requirements they must meet.

  1. All international students from non-English speaking counties must take and submit the score of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). A minimum score of 173 is required. These test results must be received before the applicant can be considered for admission. Currently, SMCC does not have an ESL program on campus, so students must arrive on campus with adequate English skills.

  2. All international students must submit, before acceptance, a “Declaration of Finances” form (provided by the college) which demonstrates that they have adequate financial resources to attend SMCC and live in the USA. This is required because financial aid is not available to international students and they must demonstrate their ability to pay all required college-related expenses (tuition, fees, books) plus housing and meals (either on campus or off campus). International students who attend SMCC with a student visa (F1) are considered non-residents and therefore must pay “out of state” or non-resident tuition rates.
