The Behavioral Health & Human Services (BHHS) Program is designed to prepare individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills for employment and/or future study in a wide range of behavioral health and human service fields.

The program provides a broad-based education designed for the modern, multi-skilled entry level worker who will be employed in a variety of settings (e.g., day treatment centers, residential treatment/care facilities, schools, juvenile justice programs, special education programs, long-terms care and nursing facilities, and in-home treatment/care programs).

Successful graduates work with individuals of all ages confronting disabling mental health issues, developmental disabilities, substance abuse, and other behavioral health conditions.

Program Options

  1. An Associate of Applied Science degree in Behavioral Health and Human Services for students seeking to enter the workforce or to advance their career at their place of employment. Graduates of the associate degree program are automatically MHRT/Community certified by virtue of their degree and eligible for Ed Tech II certification.

  2. A one-year certificate program for students seeking certification as a Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician (MHRT/Community) or specialized knowledge in the field.

Program Learning Outcomes

Note: these learning outcomes are based on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are required in all human service work as delineated by the National Organization of Human Service Professionals (NOHSE) and the Council for Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE).

Upon completion of the BHHS program, each graduate will…

  1. understand the nature of human systems: individual, group, organization, community and society, and their major interactions.

  2. understand human development, group dynamics, organizational structure, how communities are organized, how national policy is set, and how social systems interact in producing human problems.

  3. understand the conditions which promote or limit optimal functioning and classes of deviations from desired functioning in the major human systems. Students will have understanding of the major models of causation that are concerned with both the promotion of healthy functioning and with treatment-rehabilitation.

  4. identify and select interventions which promote growth and goal attainment. Graduates will be able to conduct a competent problem analysis and select strategies, services, or interventions that are appropriate to helping their clients attain a desired outcome.

  5. plan, implement, and evaluate interventions. The student will be able to design a plan of action for an identified problem and implement the plan in a systematic way.

  6. Select interventions which are congruent with the values of one's self, clients, the employing organization and the Human Service profession.

  7. Use verbal and oral communication, interpersonal relationships, and other related personal skills (such as self-discipline and time management) effectively to plan and implement services.

Continuing Your Education

Graduates of the program who wish to pursue a Baccalaureate degree can benefit from existing or pending transfer agreements with the University of Maine at Augusta, University of Southern Maine, the University of Maine at Machias, and Saint Josephs College. These agreements and past practice allow students to transfer all or nearly all of their credits toward four-year degrees in education, psychology, sociology, social work, social and behavioral sciences, mental health and human services.

Transfer Credits and Credit for Prior Learning

The BHHS program may award academic credit for coursework at other accredited institutions of higher learning or for approved human service training programs in Maine. In order to qualify for the credits, a student must be enrolled in a BHHS program and submit the required paperwork and processing fees.
