Student Health Center

Maintaining optimum health is essential to academic and personal growth. The Student Health Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive primary health care to SMCC students. We are located opposite the Admissions Office in the Campus Center.

Primary health care services are provided by a Nurse Practitioner during scheduled posted hours. Immunizations, diagnosis and treatment of episodic illnesses (such as colds, flu, bronchitis, skin rashes, sports injuries, allergies, etc.), women’s health (gyn exams, pregnancy testing, counseling, etc.), sexually transmitted disease diagnosis and treatment, and a limited number of laboratory tests are available. The Nurse Practitioner is legally authorized to write prescriptions. Consultation is provided by a family practice physician. All services are strictly confidential.

Medical Staff

Nurse Practitioner/Director of Student Health Center:
Ellen Farnsworth, MSN, MEd, APRN-BC, NP-C

Consulting Physician:
Jeffrey Saffer, M.D.

All matriculated students at SMCC must comply with all applicable immunization requirements as determined by Maine State Law. All students must have proof of diphtheria/tetanus every ten years. Students born after 1956 must also show proof of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). Selected programs have additional requirements specified by the College and the major. Students who do not meet the requirements may not register for classes. Immunizations are available at the student health center by appointment. Allied health and nursing students are required to have an annual TB screening. All immunizations are available at the Student Health Center for reasonable cost. Second year students may schedule appointments for TB testing.

Student Insurance

SMCC offers insurance policies to meet most accidental and sickness expenses not covered by the health fee. SMCC encourages students to purchase school insurance to avoid unexpected health care costs. Students are covered at school, at home, while traveling or participating in school-sponsored activities. Full details are available in the Student Health Center. Enrollment is limited to students taking six credits or more. Students may sign up for the optional health insurance (accident with illness coverage) during the first four weeks of the semester. Dependent and spousal insurance is available at an additional cost.

EMS Team

Emergency Medical Services are available through Security (741-5553). Licensed EMTs are available through our Licensed EMS response unit. Please call Security at 4553 on Campus for assistance.
