Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What type of academic programs does SMCC offer?

Answer: SMCC offers about 35 different academic programs. Most are career oriented and offer a two year Associate Degree preparing students for immediate employment. We also offer a two year Associate of Arts in Liberal Studies for students who wish to transfer to a four-year college. Some one-year certificate or two year diploma programs are offered as well.

Question: Can I transfer from SMCC to a four-year college?

Answer: Our Liberal Studies program is specifically designed with the transfer student in mind and many of our technical or career Associate Degree programs have "articulation" agreements with area four-year colleges for the student who wants to continue their education.

Question: How much does it cost to attend SMCC?

Answer: As a state sponsored technical college the tuition is the lowest in the state of Maine! Maine residents pay $68 per credit hour and non-residents $149. This means, in general terms, a full time resident student might pay about $2,700 in tuition and fees per year and a non resident about $5,300. These figures can vary up or down depending upon the number of credits taken and the course selection.

Question: Does SMCC offer financial aid to students?

Answer: Yes, over 60% of SMCC students qualify for financial aid. Last year students received over $4 million dollars in grants, scholarships, work-study employment and loans. All financial aid is "need based".

Question: What type of students attend SMCC?

Answer: About half of our students are right out of high school, the other half may have been out of high school a few years or 10 or 20 years or more! The average age is 24. Ninety percent of our students are from Maine and 10% are out of state. This includes a small but growing group of international students.

Question: Does SMCC have residence halls?

Answer: We currently have three residence halls on campus and have some limited off campus accommodations. Housing is primarily for first year students whose home is at least 30 miles from campus. Some returning or second year students can remain in the residence halls but most look for off campus housing.

Question: What is the campus like?

Answer: The campus sits on a beautiful 80 acre site overlooking Casco Bay three miles from downtown Portland. There are about 40 buildings including both modern and traditional historic structures. We have our own athletic fields, a modern gymnasium, a sandy beach and a fully functional lighthouse!

Question: Do you have athletic programs?

Answer: Yes, we have varsity athletic teams in soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball and golf. We play mostly two-year colleges in Northern New England and have a long history of fielding competitive teams. We also have non-competitive athletics and a gym with aerobic exercise equipment, and a universal and free weights room.

Question: How many students attend SMCC?

Answer: About 1,200 students attend full time and about an equal number attend part time day or evening.

Question: Do your graduates find jobs directly related to what they have studied?

Answer: The graduates of our career programs enjoy great success in finding related employment. Most years between 75 and 90% of these graduates report that they have found work in their field. Many popular programs consistently report 100% employment for their graduates who are seeking work.
